One of the most useful tools for your online marketing is a CMS. That stands for “content management system” and it’s a way to easily manage your website’s content. You may already be using one without knowing it! If not, you might want to consider making the jump.
With a CMS, it’s easy to make changes to your site. Many were developed to make blogging more practical, but they’ve developed into powerful tools that can handle an entire site of any kind. That could be anything from a one-page informational site up to an e-commerce site with thousands of products!
WordPress is the best-known CMS out there. More than 38% of all websites on the internet are based on it! But there are other alternatives, too. Joomla and Drupal are the best-known competitors, even if they have a much smaller market share.
A CMS simplifies the entire process of creating and editing a website. There are far more advantages than disadvantages, but we need to look at both.
The Advantages Of Using A CMS
Judging from how popular CMSes are for building websites, it’s fair to say they offer a lot of advantages. Let’s look at some of them:
- You don’t need to learn programming.
- There is a wide range of resources available for basic layout and additional functionality.
- Adding new content is quick and easy.
- Once you’re up and running, it’s simple to keep the site updated.
- Costs will be lower than having a site programmed
- There is a lot of community support to help find answers, particularly for WordPress.
- Multiple people can be authorized to add content to the site without fear they’ll “break” something. Different roles can also be assigned.
Disadvantages Of Using A CMS
Unfortunately, nothing’s perfect. CMSes do have faults, too.
- There’s less flexibility than with a site programmed from scratch.
- A CMS requires more server resources, meaning the site may run slower.
- You have to make sure to keep the CMS updated to prevent vulnerabilities to hackers.
- The learning curve is steeper than with a drag-and-drop page builder.
- Security can be an issue if you don’t keep on top of updates.
Is a CMS For You?
We recommend a CMS for most clients. It provides everything most businesses or individuals will need for their websites and at a lower cost than hiring a programmer. There are some limits when it comes to customization, but you have to go to extremes to hit them.
You can hire someone to set up your site on a CMS then maintain it yourself. Or you could keep them on retainer to make changes and improvements. You could even do the whole project yourself, although there is a bit to learn if you’re just starting.
You’ll be able to add blogs when you want and format them according to your desire. You can also add features and change styles quickly and (relatively) easily.
All in all, a CMS is a great tool. It may take some work to learn how to use it but if it’s set up properly and tuned for speed and user experience, it can simplify your life.
